Following are brief descriptions of some of the projects that Chastain-Skillman's Health & Safety professionals have worked on. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but should
give you an idea of the scope of work that we have done.

Indoor Air Quality Consulting Services (ongoing since 1997)
Lakeland, Florida
Since mid-1997, Chastain-Skillman's health and safety professionals have provided a wide variety of indoor air quality consulting services to the City of Lakeland. This work has involved approximately five buildings ranging in size from thirty thousand square feet to very large multi-story structures. In each case, we provided detailed IAQ diagnostic services including measurements of physical, chemical and biological agents. In one case, we conducted complex sampling and analyses of biological agents in a three-story structure requiring extensive remediation of mold contaminated surfaces. The sampling and analysis protocol implemented included the use of both filter and agar plate-type methods widely recognized in scientific literature. In another case, we were involved in the detailed sampling and analyses of airborne particulates believed to be responsible for a variety of building-related health complaints. We have also provided scientific consultation related to the remediation of Stachybotrys ssp. and other molds found to have amplified in interior wall cavities. This work was undertaken employing a variation of the New York State Protocol for fungal contamination. During the course of this work, we conducted sampling and analyses to document the effectiveness of the remediation containment methods employed.
Chastain-Skillman was instrumental in interviewing and educating employees concerning adverse reactions associated with exposures to chemical and biological agents. These efforts included group and one-on-one meetings with staff members, and discussions concerning presenting signs and symptoms. We worked closely with medical practitioners and others employing a traditional public health approach to an evaluation of the problem. In each case, we provided guidance on the determination and resolution of route problem causes. Chastain-Skillman maintains an ongoing professional relationship with the City of Lakeland providing services in IAQ, industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, environmental engineering and the environmental sciences.

Lead Hazard Evaluations (ongoing since 1997)
Sprint-Florida, Inc.
Over the past year, Chastain-Skillman has conducted lead exposure monitoring evaluations for Sprint-Florida, Inc. The purpose of these evaluations was to assist Sprint in assessing whether or not certain maintenance operations and physical locations (i.e., confined spaces) resulted in lead exposures greater than the OSHA WA permissible exposure limit (PEL).
A total of six multiple worker monitoring events were conducted in Phase I of the project. Results indicated that three of the six operations resulted in lead exposure levels above the PEL. Modifications to the maintenance operations procedures and protocols were developed and implemented. Subsequent follow-up monitoring was conducted to evaluate effectiveness of the administrative control changes. Exposure levels for two of three remaining operations were successfully reduced to less than half the PEL.
Phase II involved an effort to reduce exposures for the remaining operation. Evaluation results indicated that respiratory protection was the most feasible corrective action and was implemented with client approval. CSI provided a respiratory program and conducted initial employee lead hazard awareness and respiratory training programs.

Florida Department of Transportation
Indoor Environmental Quality Evaluation (1999)
Bartow, Florida
Pursuant to a request made in early April 1999, Chastain-Skillman conducted an Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Evaluation at the Department of Transportation (DOT) District One Administration Building in Bartow, Florida. The evaluation included an initial walk-through and assessment of the areas of concern followed by continuous and discrete monitoring of a series of air quality parameters. Monitoring of indoor air quality parameters included evaluation of carbon dioxide levels, temperature, relative humidity, and particulate concentrations. In addition, a visual assessment of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system was conducted to the extent possible.
Based upon the measurements and observations made during the evaluation, Chastain-Skillman recommended cleaning and disinfection of a relatively minor amount of apparent microbiological contamination in condensate drip pans, routine cleaning of return-side air filters impacted by particulate matter, and attentive monitoring of HVAC performance to ensure systems functioned as designed.
